São João Hospital Centre (CHSJ) is one of the largest hospitals in Europe and a reference in the northern part of Portugal. It includes the polo of Porto and the polo of Valongo, having a workforce of more than 5000 workers. From the moment it was created, it has been tied to the FMUP, enabling it to excel on account of the remarkable research and teaching processes developed therein, and to offer increasingly humanized and quality health care services. For many specialties and areas of medical know-how, CHSJ is the last instance and reference in the country in terms of diagnosis and treatment. São João is actually developing a new and cutting-edge Hospital and is building the most modern Pediatric Unit in Europe. In 2005 it started an internal reorganization process, followed by investments that are still in progress. It has about 1000 beds and more than 50 medical and surgical specialties. It’s also positioned as being “state of the art” in terms of complementary means of diagnosis and therapeutic support. It has been considered by the Public Health National School, the best Portuguese Hospital in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014. In 2013, the Hospital has won the Sustainable Health Award for these positive practices in public health management. Furthermore, the Portuguese Ministry of Health has assigned to the São João Hospital Centre its highest distinction – Gold Medal of Merit. CHSJ is also European Leader on the development of Information Technologies in Healthcare.
