Founded in 2005 and based in the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, in Lisbon, the Champalimaud Foundation (CF) is dedicated to the advancement of biomedical science, through its Champalimaud Research structure, with a focus on neuroscience and cancer translational research. Research in neuroscience is dedicated to the neural bases of behaviour and to computational technology. It involves 17 research groups and 2 associated laboratories, running 57 projects; 1/4 of its total budget (12,7M€) is secured by competitive grants. In addition, 23 technological platforms provide specialised scientific services to all groups. It has produced 148 peer reviewed papers (2/3 with an impact factor>10). Cancer research is supported by an outpatient clinic, soon to be enlarged with in-patient facilities. The clinic is organised into disease management teams and is supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic platforms. In 2014, the number of patients totalled 17.207 (for 35.283 outpatient visits, 7.569 chemotherapy and 14.217 radiotherapy sessions). There is a strong commitment to the latest technologies, including partnerships with major providers in radiotherapy and imaging. The CF participates in 20 clinical trials. The CF grants the annual António Champalimaud Vision Award (€1,000,000), now in its 9thedition,and partners with institutions in India, Brazil and Portugal in a network of three C-TRACERs –Champalimaud Centres for Translational Eye Research.
